The Daily Leader reports the top post at the Madison Police Department now belongs to Justin Meyer, who had served as a detective sergeant before earning the title of chief.

Meyer’s predecessor, Chuck Pulford, retired earlier this month after 36 years in law enforcement. Pulford was responsible for the department for nearly a decade.

City Commissioner Mike Walder says Meyer was chosen from a pool of 11 applicants. Meyer joined the department in 1999 as a patrolman and was promoted to detective in 2003. He earned the rank of sergeant in 2009.

Meyer now has nine officers and administrative assistant to supervise the department. He served as interim police chief following Pulford’s departure.
