Name For Merged Ag Groups Would Be CentraGro Cooperatives

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — If members of the South Dakota Wheat Growers and North Central Farmers Elevator approve a merger this summer, the name for the combined operation will be CentraGro Cooperatives.

The American News reports ( ) that board members of the two groups decided on the name earlier this week.

The two operations hope to create an even stronger, more sustainable business through a merger. Some farmers worry about what a merger could mean for competition, and they’re planning to start a Facebook campaign to voice their opposition.

The Aberdeen-based Wheat Growers has more than 5,400 members in the eastern Dakotas. Ipswich-based North Central Farmers Elevator serves 2,500 members in north central South Dakota and south central North Dakota. Both have a history dating about 100 years.
