Sioux Falls Man Loses $12,000 In Mail-in Lottery Scam
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Authorities in Sioux Falls say a 57-year-old man lost $12,000 in a lottery scam before a relative helped him realize it was a ruse.
Police spokesman Sam Clemens tells the Argus Leader ( ) the man received a call on Monday telling him that he had won $2 million, a car and a television.
The caller said the man needed to send a small amount of cash to cover fees and taxes before he could get the prizes.
Clemens says the man eventually sent $12,000 over three days after several more people called asking for cash.
The man eventually talked to a relative who realized he was being scammed. Clemens says he then called police and gave them the names of the men and the address he had been using.
