Yankton Officials Want People To Think About What They Flush

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Yankton officials want residents to think about the consequences of what they’re flushing down the toilet.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan ( ) reports officials are making a push to educate residents and businesses on what can and cannot enter the sewer system because un-flushable items can end up costing the city thousands in repairs to pipes and pumps.

Kyle Goodmanson is the city’s director of environmental services. He says the city has had to repair pumps only a year after they’ve been installed. Some repairs can cost $20,000.

Increasingly popular bathroom wipes that are often advertised as flushable are being blamed for creating clogs and backups in sewer systems around the nation.

Wastewater authorities nationwide say wipes may go down the toilet, but even many labeled flushable aren’t breaking down as they course through the sewer system.
