999-head Cattle Operation Approved In Southeast South Dakota

HARTFORD, S.D. (AP) — A 999-animal dairy operation has received the green light from Minnehaha County commissioners.

The Argus Leader reports ( ) farmer Kyle Albers wants to build two contained animal feeding operation buildings and a lagoon pond on land his family owns near Hartford.

Commissioners on Tuesday approved the project after Albers showed them a topographical map of the area and a drawing showing where the buildings, lagoon and buffer grove will be built.

Albers obtained a conditional use permit from the county planning commission in May, but some of his neighbors appealed the decision and forced him to appear before the commissioners Tuesday.

Contained animal feeding operations are those where animals are kept and raised in confined situations. They congregate animals, feed, manure and urine, and production operations on a small area.
