As Farmers Markets Increase In SD, SDSU Creates Vendor Guide

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — As the number of farmers markets in South Dakota continues to increase, a recently released manual from the South Dakota State University Extension aims at helping interested and existing vendors navigate regulations and become successful merchants.

SDSU Extension community development field specialist Chris Zdorovtsov says the state has gone from having about 20 markets in 2008 to around 60 this year.

Zdorovtsov says a few markets these days even accept SNAP benefits, known as food stamps, to give more people a chance to buy fresh food. The state Department of Social Services provides free card-reader machines to vendors to specifically accept SNAP cards.

The manual includes chapters on state regulations, food safety practices, promotional opportunities and product pricing, among other tips and guidelines. It is available online.
