Counterculture Group Mulling A Gathering In Black Hills

BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST, S.D. (AP) — A contingent of people affiliated with a counterculture group that annually brings together thousands of people in a national forest is meeting in the Black Hills to hash out whether to hold the event there in July.

Members of the Rainbow Family of Living Light came together Wednesday to debate plans to hold the gathering in the Black Hills. The meeting was partially in response to some Native American concerns.

Black Hills National Forest Supervisor Craig Bobzien says members of the Oglala Sioux and Rosebud Sioux tribes have pushed back against the gathering because of its potential effects on the land.

If the group decides to host the event, it could bring more than 5,000 people to the Black Hills.

The main gathering is set for July 1-7.
