Fire Marshal: Be Careful Lighting Fireworks For July Fourth

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — State Fire Marshal Paul Merriman is reminding people celebrating the Fourth of July holiday to be careful when they’re shooting off legal fireworks.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said Friday that the sale of fireworks in the state is legal this weekend.

Ignition is allowed beginning on June 27 and ending on July 5.

Merriman says safety is important and says every year there are some injuries and unintended fires.

He says people should follow directions listed on the fireworks, avoid areas fires could start when lighting fireworks and keep water nearby.
