Red Cross Opens Emergency Shelter In Fort Thompson
FORT THOMPSON, S.D. (AP) — The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at the tribal headquarters on the Crow Creek Reservation to help residents affected by severe storms that hit the region Friday.
Parts of western and central South Dakota were hit hard with rain, strong winds and hail.
The nonprofit says Red Cross workers are providing food, a place to sleep and support to residents in Fort Thompson.
Power was knocked in parts of the reservation and some homes have been received significant damage. Red Cross workers are on scene accessing the damage and more staff and volunteers are on the way.
KELO-TV reports strong winds also flipped campers at nearby Big Bend Dam.
