South Dakota Feed Supplier Says Bird Flu Taking Toll

LAKE NORDEN, S.D. (AP) — The president of a feed supply company in eastern South Dakota says the bird flu outbreak sweeping the Midwest is taking a toll on his business.

Rusty Antonen is the president of J & R Feeds, a Lake Norden supplier that works with poultry producers. Antonen tells KDLT-TV ( ) that the outbreak has been “traumatic” for his company.

He says that four of the 15 large turkey farms they deal with have been hit with the virus.

Farms that have been affected are typically out of commission for about six months, which means less business for Antonen.

He says the virus outbreak also costs his company more money and time. All of their trucks have to be disinfected before employees drive onto farms and into their feed supply warehouses.
