State Officials Rededicate Civil War Monument In Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State officials and residents in Pierre have re-enacted the original dedication of a civil war monument on the grounds of the state capitol 95 years after it was first christened.

Officials rededicated the Civil War Monument on Monday. The Capitol Complex Restoration and Beautification Commission also approved various upgrades to the monument site including sidewalks, lighting, benches, landscaping and a flagpole.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard read the remarks made at the 1920 dedication by former Gov. Peter Norbeck.

A group of Pierre citizens also sung “America” and “The Star Spangled Banner,” which were both performed at the original dedication.
