Tribes, Fort Pierre Look To Address Vacant Sioux Nation Site

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Fort Pierre and tribal officials are trying to find ways to maintain an unfinished tribal center in the city that is drawing complaints because of overgrown lawns and dilapidated structures.

The Wakpa Sica (WAHK’-pah SEECH’-uh) Reconciliation Place was to be Sioux Nation cultural, educational and legal resource complex, but federal funding dried up almost a decade ago and it’s been vacant since.

Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association Executive Director Gay Kingman says the group is forming a committee to try to find a way to finish the facility, and to maintain the grounds in the meantime.

The Capital Journal reports ( ) that the Fort Pierre City Council has decided to wait to help until it can find a way to protect the city from any liability.
