Woman Accused Of Leaving Kids To Die Pleads Guilty
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A South Dakota woman accused of leaving her two young daughters to die in an unheated car during a frigid winter day on a North Dakota American Indian reservation has pleaded guilty to child abuse, saying she was under the influence of drugs.
Twenty-five-year-old Michelle Wounded Face entered pleas Tuesday in federal court. She’ll be sentenced Sept. 2.
She could face 10 years in prison but also could be sentenced to time served, about six months. The decision is up to Judge Daniel Hovland. He says he’d like to see Wounded Face get help rather than a lengthy prison term.
Wounded Face is accused of abandoning her daughters in a car for more than three hours Jan. 3, in bitter cold. They survived. She says she doesn’t remember what happened.
