Brother Of Slain Rapid City Police Officer Joins The Force
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — One of the newest members of the Rapid City police force is the brother of an officer who was killed in the line of duty four years ago.

Mackenzie Armstrong was among 11 new officers sworn in during a Wednesday ceremony. His brother, Nick Armstrong, and another officer, Ryan McCandless, were shot and killed by a man during a routine traffic stop in August 2011. Officers shot the suspect, Daniel Tiger, who died the next day.
Mackenzie Armstrong said becoming a police officer “is a dream come true,” and that he believes his brother would be proud of him.
“What happened that day was unfortunate, but it came from my heart that I wanted to be in law enforcement,” he told KEVN-TV. “And it’s where I want to be. It’s what my heart wants to do.”
Among those who attended the ceremony was Tim Doyle, an officer who was shot and wounded in the shootout with Tiger.
Mayor Steve Allender, who used to be the police chief, told KELO-TV that when Mackenzie Armstrong expressed interest in joining the police force, he discussed it with Armstrong’s parents.
“I can’t control all the outcomes, you know, of life, but I wanted to make sure we didn’t put him into the system until he was physically and mentally ready for the challenge,” Allender said. “And, you know, his folks are 100 percent supportive and are not being overly worrisome about any potential danger. And I think that’s the right attitude for the parents of a police officer.”
