Century-old Catholic School In Central SD Set To Be Razed

POLO, S.D. (AP) — Parishioners in the unincorporated community of Polo are asking Catholic church officials for permission to raze a historic church and school complex that was built in a Spanish Mission-style more than a century ago.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports ( ) that most of the Saint Liborius Church and School is empty and crumbling. The first buildings of the complex were built in 1904.

Parishioners have asked the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls for permission to raze the old building and build a new Parish Hall. If it’s granted, the church and rectory will be left untouched.

After most of the complex is torn down, the new hall will also have a Spanish Mission-style facade. People will gather in the new building for meals and fellowship.
