Intact Pottery Found At 1,000-year-old Indian Village
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Archaeologists working at the Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell have uncovered an intact ceramic pot.
The Daily Republic reports ( ) it’s the first time an intact piece of pottery has been found at the site, where research has been ongoing for nearly 90 years.
Site Executive Director Cindy Gregg calls it “a really big finding.”
The pot is just a couple of inches wide. Gregg says that might be why it’s stayed in one piece after an estimated 1,000 years.
The pot will be tested further in England to try to identify what it was used for. Students from the University of Exeter in England and Augustana College in Sioux Falls work every year at the site that holds dual status as a National Register and National Historic Landmark site.
