Jackley, Other AGs Send Religious Liberty Letter To Congress

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined 14 of his fellow chief legal officers in petitioning Congress to continue tax exemptions for religious organizations that oppose same-sex marriage.

Jackley and his fellow attorneys general sent the letter Thursday to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner.

Jackley says the letter aims to ensure that the religious liberties of people and organizations who oppose same-sex marriages are protected. He says the new rights of same-sex couples must coexist with the rights of freedom of religion and speech.

On Thursday, Jackley said public workers with religious objections to same-sex marriages could ask someone else to issue marriage licenses to a gay couple. He said a “commonsense solution” like that will ensure no one’s rights are violated.
