SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A man serving life in prison for killing a woman in Sioux Falls 45 years ago has died.
Corrections officials say 69-year-old Dale Aschmeller died Thursday morning at a Sioux Falls hospital, following a lengthy illness.
Aschmeller was given a life prison term in 1971 for killing Stella Van Broeke during a $700 tavern robbery in November 1970. Authorities said she had been stabbed, choked, saturated with gasoline and set on fire.
