South Dakota Takes Up Polygamists’ Request For More Water
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota regulators are taking up a polygamist group’s request for more water at a remote compound.
The regulators on Thursday said they would allow questions about the group’s faith and background, despite a request from the group’s attorney that those issues be blocked during the hearing.
Seth Jeffs, brother of imprisoned sect leader Warren Jeffs, has requested doubling the rate of water able to be drawn at the compound.
But he’s seemed reluctant to answer questions during the Water Management Board’s hearing. Seth Jeffs said he’s unaware how many people live at the compound, though he spends almost all of his time there.
Jeffs also said he doesn’t know much about the leadership of a religious trust there run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
