Jackley Explains Proposed Elections Constitutional Amendment
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Attorney General Marty Jackley has released an explanation for a proposed constitutional amendment dealing with elections.
The amendment would establish nonpartisan elections in South Dakota. Candidates would not be identified by party affiliation on either the primary or general election ballot. It would not apply to elections for U.S. president.
The amendment also would require secret ballot elections for certain legislative officers.
Jackley’s explanation is required by law. His filing with the secretary of state’s office is another step in the process for proposal supporters to get the proposals on the November 2016 ballot.
Once they file required paperwork with the secretary of state’s office, supporters can begin pursuing the necessary 27,741 signatures by Nov. 9.
