SD Attorney General Warning Of IRS Phone Scam
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office is warning residents of a telephone scam in which callers say they’re trying to collect money owed to the Internal Revenue Service.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says the scam involves a caller telling the person that they are being sued by the IRS for an unresolved debt. Some of the threats claimed that an arrest warrant had been issued. Callers then ask for personal identifying information or demand a wire payment.
Jackley says the IRS does not ask for personal identifying or financial information through phone calls. He says anyone receiving such calls should contact his office’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-300-1986 or [email protected].
