Commissioners Again Facing Opposition On Fort Meade Way
STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — The Meade County Commission has set a date for first reading of an ordinance that could complicate the building of Fort Meade Way.
KBHB-AM reports that commissioners want to build the controversial road that would connect 131st Avenue at the Buffalo Chip to Cardinal Place at Pleasant Valley. The proposed road would have to be gravel as voters already defeated a tax district set up to pay for a paved road.
But opponents of the road have gathered enough petition signatures to put a new ordinance to a vote.
Commission chairman Alan Aker says he fears the situation could create the state’s first-ever county-imposed road-less area on private property.
The ordinance’s first reading has been set for Nov. 13 at 8:30 a.m. Public comment will be taken.
