North Dakota Tribal College Closes Branch In South Dakota
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A college run by North Dakota tribes has closed a satellite branch in South Dakota.
The shutdown of the Black Hills Learning Center in Rapid City ends a $1.2 million expansion project after just two years.
College President Leander “Russ” McDonald says the center needed 150 students to be viable, but it attracted fewer than 40. He speculates other schools in the region might have drawn away potential students.
McDonald says the low number of students and federal budget cuts doomed the center. But he says students can continue taking classes online.

The satellite branch was a resource center, with no actual classes taught there.
Three staff worked there. One took another job, one was cut and one was offered a position on the Bismarck campus but declined.
