Officer-involved Shootings Reach Record Number This Year
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota has seen the most officer-involved shootings this year since the state started keeping records in 2001.
The Mitchell Daily Republic ( ) reports there have been six officer-involved shootings in South Dakota in 2015.
The Attorney General’s office says officer-involved shootings are when on-duty police officers shoot a citizen.
The state started keeping records informally in 2001 and implemented a formal protocol in 2003.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says the shootings are “on the mind” of attorneys general across the nation.
Jackley is hosting a National Association of Attorneys General summit on 21st century policing as part of an initiative focusing on issues including officer-involved shootings and police body cameras.
Jackley has praised the training South Dakota officers complete for high-pressure situations.
