Tribal Official: South Dakota Wildfire Partially Contained
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A tribal official says a wildfire in South Dakota on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has been partially contained.
Johnelle Leingang is the tribal chairman’s executive secretary and a member of the tribe’s emergency response team. She tells the Bismarck Tribune ( ) the fire that started near Wakpala, South Dakota, was “fairly well” contained by Monday afternoon.
She estimates that about 4.5 square miles have burned so far and says a small blaze was still burning and a fire crew was working on a smoldering area.
There were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries.
It wasn’t immediately known what started the fire, which was the second in as many days on the reservation that straddles the Dakotas.
On Sunday, a fire destroyed three homes and a church in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, and 875 residents were evacuated.
