Canadian Diplomats, South Dakota Leaders To Mark Canada Day

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Canadian diplomats and South Dakota leaders will mark Canada Day at the state Capitol.

Diplomats and members of the Alberta and Manitoba Legislative Assemblies will join South Dakota officials and lawmakers Wednesday in Pierre.

Consul General Jamshed Merchant, who is Canada’s top diplomat in the Upper Midwest, is scheduled to address a joint session of the South Dakota Legislature at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public.

America’s northern neighbor is South Dakota’s largest export market. More than 40 percent of South Dakota’s foreign-bound goods are sold to Canada, and annual trade between the state and Canada totals $1.2 billion.
