Opponents Of Proposed Solar Farm Near Sioux Falls Appealing

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Opponents of a proposed solar farm on the outskirts of Sioux Falls are appealing to city and Minnehaha County officials.

A joint city-county planning commission last September approved the $25 million Cherry Creek solar farm proposed by Minnesota-based Geronimo Energy, under certain conditions.

The Argus Leader reports ( ) some neighbors have appealed, and a hearing was scheduled Tuesday. Opponents’ worries include a decrease in property values and problems with glare.

They also wonder what would happen to the solar panels if the project didn’t succeed.

The farm would generate enough power for about 2,000 homes. Construction is to begin in spring 2016, with the farm operational by the end of next year. The company has said the farm would be “essentially noiseless” and the panels wouldn’t have glare issues.
