House Panel Buys More Time To Review Transportation Funding
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State House lawmakers facing a legislative deadline have bought about two more weeks to consider funding for roads and bridges.
The House State Affairs Committee on Tuesday killed its version of a transportation package that would have raised about $50 million in its first year. It was roughly similar to the transportation plan Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proposed.
Instead, lawmakers will take up the proposal the Senate has passed, which is more modest than the House plan.
House Majority Leader Brian Gosch says the committee had too many questions about the size of the tax hikes in the proposal compared to the actual road and bridge funding need.
The oil and gas industry has opposed longer-term increases in motor fuel taxes included in the House plan.
