Senate Votes To Increase Scholarship Amount For New Students
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Senate has voted to phase in the amount of funding available to college students who receive the state’s Opportunity Scholarship.
Senators voted to amend the bill Tuesday to allow incoming South Dakota students to receive up to $1,300 for their first three years of college and up to $2,600 for their fourth year. Current students would not see increases.
Republican Sen. Deb Peters says the increase for current students had to be removed after state economists predicted that revenue collections next budget year will fall short of previous projections.
South Dakota students have to meet certain academic requirements and attend an in-state post-secondary institution to be eligible.
The bill now returns to the full House.
