Wind Cave National Park Prescribed Fire Grows Out Of Control

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A prescribed burn at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota has turned into a wildfire that has burned more than 1 ½ square miles.

The National Park Service says high winds on Monday pushed the flames outside of the planned fire boundaries. The wildfire is being fought on the ground and from the air. About 70 people are involved.

Officials say the fire is still within the park boundaries. There is no estimated time of containment.

The National Weather Service says smoke from the fire has moved into the Rapid City area.

Forecasters say dangerous fire weather is in store for much of the Northern Plains over the next several days, with gusty winds and low humidity levels.
