Hotel Built In Early 1900s Torn Down In South Dakota Town
ANDOVER, S.D. (AP) — A hotel built more than 110 years ago has been torn down in a northeastern South Dakota town.
The Aberdeen American News ( ) reports the Waldorf Hotel in the town of Andover was demolished Thursday.
Parts of the building’s north wall had collapsed Wednesday. Town board chairwoman Ilene Helmer says the building’s owners were told it would have to be torn down for residents’ safety.
Helmer says the building was last open as a hotel and cafe in 1970. She says the property has gone through multiple owners who wanted to restore it.
According to the National Park Service website, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Andover has fewer than 100 people and is about 30 miles east of Aberdeen.
