Spring Storm Could Dump Up To 2 Feet Of Snow In Western SD

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Western South Dakota residents: dust off the scrapers, shovels and heavy coats.

A late-spring storm is expected to dump up to two feet of snow on areas west of the Missouri River. A winter storm warning from the National Weather Service is expected to go into effect at 6 p.m. Saturday as most of the snow is expected overnight into Sunday morning.

Rapid City has already seen some snow, but up to 12 inches are expected to pile up in that area. Meanwhile, the Black Hills and higher elevations could see between one and two feet of snow.

Authorities are discouraging people from driving overnight as travel may become hazardous due to heavy snow and low visibility. The heavy snow could also down tree branches and cause power outages.
