Opening Statements Set In Bosworth Election Law Trial

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Attorneys are set to give opening statements in the election law violation trial of former South Dakota political candidate Annette Bosworth.

A jury of 12 people and two alternates in Pierre is hearing the case scheduled to get underway Wednesday afternoon.

Bosworth is a 43-year-old Sioux Falls physician who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the 2014 U.S. Senate race. She’s accused of election law violations that include allegedly being out of the country during a time when her petitions to get on the ballot say she was gathering signatures.

Bosworth says she’s the target of “political persecution.” She’s pleaded not guilty to perjury and filing false documents.

Former independent candidate Clayton Walker faces similar accusations. The cases of Bosworth and Walker spurred election law changes during the 2015 Legislature.
