2 South Dakota Officials Oppose Renaming Harney Peak

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Two members of Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s cabinet don’t want South Dakota’s tallest point renamed.

The Rapid City Journal reports ( ) that Game, Fish and Parks Secretary Kelly Hepler and Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen submitted letters to the state Board on Geographic Names formally opposing the restoration of a Lakota Sioux name.

The board has recommended renaming of Harney Peak to “Hinhan Kaga,” which means Making of Owls.

Hepler and Hagen say the proposed name is difficult to pronounce, and that it would confuse visitors.

Supporters of the change say the current name for the 7,242-foot peak is offensive.

Harney Peak was named for Army Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led a command of soldiers that killed 86 Sioux in Nebraska.
