Crews In Deadwood Starting Final Phases Of Cemetery Cleanup
DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — Construction crews are entering the final phases of a $2 million restoration of a historic cemetery in Deadwood.
Deadwood city officials tell the Black Hills Pioneer ( ) that the project to clean up and restore the historic St. Ambrose Cemetery is entering its fifth phase. The final phase will begin next summer.
The cemetery dates back to 1878 and many early pioneers are interned there.
Deadwood Historic Preservation Officer Kevin Kuchenbecker says while the cemetery doesn’t hold Deadwood legends like Wild Bill Hickok, it’s still of equal importance to the historic mining town.
Kuchenbecker says the cemetery provides invaluable insight into Deadwood’s transformation from a gold mining town in a Victorian-era city.
