Boy Dies, 3 Others Hurt In DUI Crash Near Mitchell

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A 14-year-old boy died and three other youths were killed in a vehicle crash that authorities say involved a drunken driver.

The boy was a front-seat passenger in a sport utility vehicle that rolled in the ditch off a gravel road west of Mitchell mid-day Thursday. Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Hanson identified the boy to The Daily Republic as Lenard Boyer, of Mitchell.

The patrol says two 14-year-old boys and a 12-year-old boy in the backseat suffered minor injuries, along with the 22-year-old woman driving the car.

Hanson identified the driver as Karla Martinez, of Mitchell. She’s facing several charged including drunken driving and vehicular homicide. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney, and a home telephone listing for her couldn’t be found.
