Black Hills Counterculture Gathering To Get Temporary Court

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A federal prosecutor says a temporary court is being set up at a counterculture gathering in the Black Hills so attendees with tickets can take care of them quickly.

A summer gathering of the Rainbow Family of Living Light begins Wednesday in western South Dakota and continues through July 7. The peace gatherings annually draw thousands from across the country, but can cause problems for local law enforcement.

KOTA-TV ( ) reports the court will be set up Thursday morning in a small trailer, with federal prosecutors and a public defender on hand. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Peterman says the court will be a short distance from the encampment near Deerfield Lake.

The TV station says there have been more than 35 tickets issued so far, including for marijuana possession and driving without insurance.
