South Dakota’s ‘Christmas Tree Lady’ Dorothy Howe Dies At 86

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A woman who started the South Dakota custom of bringing Christmas trees to the state Capitol in Pierre has died.

The Isburg Funeral Chapel says Dorothy “Dottie” Howe died Friday at her home in Pierre. She was 86.

In 2013, Howe told the Capital Journal ( ) that the Christmas tree tradition got its start in 1981 from a sketch she showed to former Gov. Bill Janklow.

She told the newspaper that the governor thought it was “a wonderful idea.”

Howe’s fondness for Christmas trees began in 1932 when she was 4 years old and growing up on a farm near Salem.
