Girl Diagnosed With Diabetes To Attend Children’s Congress
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A 14-year-old South Dakota girl who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes seven years ago will represent the state at the Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C., this year.
The Argus Leader ( ) reports that Maddie McElroy, of Sioux Falls, will be attending the event later this month.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Children’s Congress is held every other year with more than 100 kids diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes serving as delegates, meeting with their state representatives.
McElroy says participants tell lawmakers how funding for Type 1 diabetes is benefiting children. She adds that she is “super excited” to meet “the higher-up people.”
McElroy’s family learned she had diabetes after they were on vacation and she wasn’t feeling well. McElroy says the disease has not slowed her down.
