Rounds Creates Leadership PAC To Help Likeminded Lawmakers
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds has created a political action committee often used to raise a politician’s profile and help get likeminded candidates elected.
Rob Skjonsberg (SHAWNS’-berg) is the committee’s assistant treasurer. He says Rounds’ team started fundraising with the Peter Norbeck Leadership PAC last month.
Skjonsberg says the political focus of the senator’s team is on the leadership PAC following his victory in November. He says the goal is to support likeminded candidates and help retain the Republican Senate majority.
Viveca Novak of the Center for Responsive Politics says leadership PACs are often used to help build support for a leadership run or to secure a good committee post.
Federal Election Commission records show at least nine of 12 freshmen Republican U.S. senators have a leadership PAC active.
