Armed South Dakotans Stand Guard Outside Recruiting Center

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Armed South Dakotans are standing guard outside a busy military recruiting center in Sioux Falls to protect military recruiters following last week’s killing of four Marines and a sailor in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Twenty-three-year-old Zachary Gallegos and 26-year-old Landon Nohava were stationed outside the Armed Forces Recruiting Center on Thursday morning. Both men carried handguns.

The pair joins others in the U.S. who have moved to guard recruiting centers. The military does not permit recruiters to be armed.

Gallegos says following the shooting at a Chattanooga recruiting center and Navy and Marine reserve center he felt he had a responsibility to help.

The men say they plan to help guard the recruiting center until the government adds security or allows recruiters to arm themselves.

Nohava is an army veteran. Gallegos is a civilian.

This story has been corrected to show the shooting in Chattanooga occurred at a Navy and Marine reserve center, not a Naval Base.
