Grass Fire Prompts Evacuation Of Small Standing Rock Town
CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — A grass fire fanned by strong winds destroyed buildings in Cannon Ball and prompted the evacuation of the town on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
There were no reports of injuries in the Sunday afternoon fire, but the flames burned at least three homes and a church.
Tribal Emergency Manager Elliott Ward tells The Bismarck Tribune that several hay bales caught fire north of Cannon Ball on Saturday night, and the flames spread into town Sunday when winds gusted up to 60 mph.
The 875 residents were evacuated after power poles got knocked down. A shelter was set up at the tribal casino near Fort Yates.
