Sioux Falls Campaign Contribution Limits On Chopping Block

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sioux Falls’ City Council will consider a proposal to eliminate a $5,000 cap on political action committee donations in city elections.

The Argus Leader reports ( ) City Clerk Lorie Hogstad brought the proposal as part of a package of changes aimed at clearing up confusion between city and state election laws.

The proposal also would do away with campaign contribution limits unique to Sioux Falls. City officials say they don’t foresee a flood of new money pouring into city races. And City Attorney David Pfeifle (FY’-flee) says Sioux Falls is vulnerable if a PAC were to challenge the $5,000 limit in court.

Steve Hildebrand has worked on various city campaigns. He thinks allowing unlimited contributions could give PACS undue influence.

The Council is to act on the proposal Nov. 2.
