Men’s golf team takes 16th at invitational Tuesday

With only one tournaments left on the schedule, the University of South Dakota men’s golf team was looking for a strong performance when they traveled to Hopkinsville, Ky., and played in the Austin Peay State Invitational.

The Coyotes finished 16th out a total of 16 teams in the three round tournament with a total team score of 908.

Individually leading the Coyotes was senior Lucas Turner who placed 42nd overall with a score of 220. Freshman Connor McDonagh-Poh also helped pace the Coyotes with a score of 229 and tied for 75th place. Junior Ty Munneke shot a 148 through two days but had to withdraw from the final round Tuesday due to severe back pain.

Turner said the Coyotes played some of their best golf of the season during the tournament.

“We threw a few freshmen into the mix and they responded well. We put together solid rounds and Monday we shot a team season low 293,” Turner said. “We may not have finished where we wanted in the standings, but we can definitely build off our team scores from the week and take that confidence into next week’s well.”

Munneke also said the team needs to cut back on the amount of mistakes it has been making.

“As always, the short game can improve along with being consistent,” Munneke said. “We all have good rounds and if we can just limit a few mistakes, we would be right in the thick of better.”

Turner said the tournament showed the younger players how teams compete at a national level.

“It was really fun to play in a tournament out in Kentucky with a great field of teams,” Turner said. “It’s always fun to go up against some of the better teams out there and see how we stack note.
