THE RANT: Dear South Dakota weather

Dear South Dakota weather,

I know you were very friendly to everyone in the Upper Midwest this year in regards to next to no long freezing morning walks to class. However, the fact of the matter is summer-time weather in mid-March has driven my mind crazy.

Last week I enjoyed the high 70s temperatures as much as anyone else, but my academic calendar did not enjoy the same nice weather. It was nearly impossible to try and focus on my busy work load when all I wanted to do is play in the first volleyball game of spring. Instead of working on my six-page papers, I went fishing, thinking that getting those first tastes of summer out of the way early would help my mind focus, but it only continued to get worse.

The weather affects my mood more than most and when I tasted summer for two weeks in a row, the first in Mexico over spring break and the second, last week’s 80 degree Friday; I thought finals were beginning this week.

Don’t get me wrong, I love nice weather more than anything, but after growing up in South Dakota all my life, 70 degree weather is supposed to be a treat and not regular, everyday weather.

I need a break from all this nice weather in order to finish my semester off in strong form. All I am asking is for a short break from the non-stop sunny days.

I have seen nice weather like this spoiled in the early months such as March and April and once May hits, 40 degree weather comes back from February.

Please, for the sake of my semester, keep up the sunshine but please, no more 80 degree March days. My success depends on it.

Sincerely,

Eric Mayer, junior
