Mock Draft

1. Houston Texans – Khalil Mack
Steam with Clowney to Houston has been cooling off big time in the last few days. I think it comes down to Johnny Football and Mack for the pick. That is if they don’t find a trade partner that wants Clowney. They decide to go with potentially the next Demarcus Ware.

2. St. Louis Rams – (TRADE) Bucs – Johnny Manziel
Trade alert! First trade of the draft involves some excitement. Tampa Bay has a new coach, Lovie Smith, and the team is already filled with a lot of defensive talent. Mike Glennon isn’t this regime’s guy. They’ll take the exciting “Johnny Football” and let him learn under Josh McCown.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney falling to three?!?! What?! I know, not the consensus. Jacksonville really shouldn’t think too hard about this. Jags’ head coach Gus Bradley comes from Seattle and understands how helpful Clowney will be in helping him turn this defense around.

4. Cleveland Browns – Sammy Watkins
Mike Evans has gotten some steam here and he wouldn’t be a bad selection. But Cleveland should sit back and realize that Sammy Watkins is indeed the best receiver in the draft and would form a fun tandem with Josh Gordon for whoever the next quarterback is.

5. Oakland Raiders – Greg Robinson
The Raiders inexplicably let Jared Veldheer walk in free agency and replaced him with Donald Penn. That was a short-term stopgap signing. Robinson has Orlando Pace type potential if he can continue growing as a player.

6. Atlanta Falcons – (TRADE) 49ers – Mike Evans
Trade alert! The 49ers are on the cusp of winning a Super bowl and are potentially one player away from achieving that goal. They also have the luxury of having 11 draft picks in this year’s draft. There’s no way they have 11 open spots on their roster, so they’ll trade up for potentially the next Vincent Jackson.

7. Tampa Bay Bucs – (TRADE) Rams – Jake Matthews
The Rams were sitting at two and had to decide between three players: Clowney, Robinson and Matthews. In this scenario, they pick up some extra picks and have the decision made for them. Jeff Fisher also gets to coach the son of one of his former players, Bruce Matthews.

8. Minnesota Vikings (TRADE) Rams – Aaron Donald
Trade Alert! The Rams, who just made a selection, jump right back up on the clock. Rick Spielman loves getting extra picks to work with later in the draft and decides he doesn’t love anyone enough at eight, so he lets the Rams select the most disruptive three-technique player in the draft.

9. Buffalo Bills – Taylor Lewan
The Bills could go in a lot of directions with this selection, but at the end of the day decide to take the player that will help last year’s first-round pick, E.J. Manuel, stay upright. This will allow Cordy Glenn to eventually move over to right tackle.

10. Detroit Lions – Justin Gilbert
Lots of people have the Lions going wide receiver with this pick and I just don’t get it. They just signed Golden Tate and have seemingly been in desperate need of a cornerback for the last ten years. Even though Gilbert is one of the least physical corners you see on tape, Martin Mayhew goes with the biggest ball hawk of any cornerback in the draft.

11. Tennessee Titans – Kyle Fuller
The Titans just lost Alterraun Verner in free agency and find his replacement with this pick. Some may be surprised with Fuller going this high, but don’t be shocked to see him crack the top-15 come draft day. He fits the mold of a big, press corner that the Seahawks are starting to make trendy.

12. New York Giants – Eric Ebron
The Giants are a team that generally lets the draft come to them. They don’t think too hard about it and take the best player on the board. Even though I don’t agree with Ebron being the best player available, I can’t disagree with him being a good fit in New York for Eli & company.

13. St. Louis Rams – (TRADE) Vikings – Blake Bortles
The Vikings weren’t enamored with any player at eight and decide 13 is a good value to snatch up their quarterback of the future. Bortles will have the luxury of sitting behind Matt Cassel for, at the very least half a season, and be the franchise quarterback the team was envisioning once the new stadium opens in 2016.

14. Chicago Bears – (TRADE) Steelers – Zack Martin
Trade alert! The Steelers decide to move up one pick and take the last upper-echelon offensive lineman on the board. Some view Martin as a better fit at guard, but the Steelers will first hope that he can fix their revolving door at left tackle. Mike Adams just cannot be trusted as the blindside protector of Ben Roethlisberger anymore.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers – (TRADE) Bears – Ra’Shede Hageman
The Bears move back and make a surprise selection with the Minnesota product. I have no real steam with this, just a gut-call. Hageman has all the potential in the world and the Bears could use some serious help in the middle of their defense. Lamarr Houston, who he plays very similar to, and Jared Allen will help tutor him.

16. Dallas Cowboys – Anthony Barr
The Cowboys decided Demarcus Ware wasn’t worth a giant salary cap hit anymore, so they let him go. They never really found a replacement and decide to take the pass-rushing specialist from UCLA. Football often isn’t brain surgery and this pick just seems like too obvious of a pick.

17. Baltimore Ravens – C.J. Mosely
The Ravens, much like the Giants, often take the best player available. Mosely has some injury concerns, but is a leader and a winner. Ozzie Newsome goes to his alma mater to find the long-term replacement for Ray Lewis.

18. New York Jets – (TRADE) Eagles – Calvin Pryor
Trade alert! The Eagles recently cut DeSean Jackson and many view his replacement as this pick. That definitely could be true, but with the crazy amount of depth at wide receiver, Chip Kelly decides to get a man who play-style is very reminiscent of a former Eagle great, Brian Dawkins.

19. Miami Dolphins – (TRADE) Falcons – Dee Ford
Trade alert! The Falcons, who already traded down once in this draft, decide they’ve waited around long enough. By trading up for Ford, they may have finally found the pass-rusher they’ve lacked for the past few seasons. He also fits in nicely as a stand-up pass rusher in their new, what looks to be, 3-4 defense.

20. Arizona Cardinals – Derek Carr
I went back and forth on this pick. The Cardinals are on the horizon and probably want a player that can step in immediately and help them get over the hump. But it’s tough to rely on Carson Palmer for too many more years. Going this route, they’ll feel a lot better about the future of their offense.

21. Green Bay Packers – Ryan Shazier
Packer fans probably wanted a safety with this pick and the top safety is sitting right there. Ted Thompson goes a different route and decides he wants to get more athletic at the linebacker position. This would be a steal for the Packers. Shazier is a tackling machine and is aggressive enough to fit in the middle of their defense.

22. Philadelphia Eagles – (TRADE) Jets –Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
The Jets were sitting at 18 and decided there was plenty of talent left on the board for them to move back a few picks. They probably thought they would end up with Marqise Lee or Brandin Cooks with this selection, but are shocked that Clinton-Dix is still on the board.

23. Kansas City Chiefs – (TRADE) Jaguars – Teddy Bridgewater
Trade alert! The Jaguars ended up with the best defensive player in the draft in the first round and decide to not risk losing out on a quarterback before the day is done. Bridgewater doesn’t wow you with any throws and will need some time to adjust to the speed of the game. But he is a very efficient passer and gets to go back to his home state and resurrect the Jaguars anemic offense.

24. Cincinnati Bengals – Odell Beckham, Jr.
The Bengals have a very talented roster, but you can never have too many athletes on your team. Cincinnati decides to draft a dynamic return man and solid second option for Andy Dalton to pass to.

25. San Diego Chargers – Darqueze Dennard
The Chargers have a massive need at the cornerback position. They also face Peyton Manning twice a year. Lucky for them, Dennard falls right in to their laps. He has some injury concerns, but he plays with no fear. A steal for San Diego, similar to the Keenan Allen pick from a year ago. Louis Nix III is also an option here.

26. Cleveland Browns – Xavier Su’a-Filo
The Browns were really hoping Dennard would fall to them, but instead decide to bolster their offense with a day one starting guard. As for their quarterback situation, they decide no one warrants a selection at 26 and will hope that A.J. McCarron or Jimmy Garoppolo falls to them in the second round.
27. New Orleans Saints – Marqise Lee
Lee was a top-five pick before the season started, but suffered from poor quarterback play and some inconsistencies in his game. The saints realize he still has a ton of talent and will gladly add another weapon for Drew Brees to throw to.

28. Carolina Panthers – Morgan Moses
The Panthers have three glaring needs: wide receiver, left tackle and cornerback. They decide the lack of depth at tackle trumps the talent still left on the board at wide receiver and cornerback. A top-notch wide receiver will likely still be sitting there in the second round for them.

29. New England Patriots – Jace Amaro
The Patriots offense seemed to be clicking on all cylinders when Tom Brady had big-bodied tight ends stretching the field just a couple years ago. Amaro fits the bill nicely and would become an instant impact weapon for New England.

30. San Francisco 49ers – (TRADE) Falcons (TRADE) Dolphins – Cyrus Kuoandjio
This pick started off with San Francisco, and then went to Atlanta and now ends up with Miami. The Dolphins are probably happy they were able to pick up some extra picks on day two and three, but in the meantime, select their right tackle for next season.

31. Denver Broncos – Jeremiah Attaochu
Jordan Matthews or Brandin Cooks would have been very nice selections for Denver, but the signing of Emmanuel Sanders made that unnecessary. Instead, they go for Georgia Tech’s all-time leader in sacks. Learning under Demarcus Ware would be very beneficial for Attaochu.

32. Seattle Seahawks – Stephon Tuitt
The Seahawks cap off round one with a player that has the potential to make a lot of teams look foolish for passing on him. Tuitt is a massive human being that is very athletic. When motivated, he can look special. Pete Carrol seems to always get the best out of players and Tuitt will be another player for him to teach how to get after the quarterback.
