Cowgirls wrangle a 2-1 win from the ‘Yotes

Wyoming had a losing record coming into Friday’s soccer game against the University of South Dakota, but the Cowgirls outshot the Coyotes 14 to five to claim the win, 2-1.

The Cowgirls (2-4-0) scored two goals in the second half within about a minute of each other. USD (4-3-0) was coming off a record-setting 11-0 win last weekend against Northern Arizona, but struggled for possession with the young talent from “The Equality State.”

USD’s leading scorer, junior Taylor Nivala, put the Coyotes ahead early with a goal seven minutes into the match. Heading in a cross from first-year Courtney Baker, Nivala has five goals and one assist on the season.

Wyoming came back into the game with a quick succession of goals in the 56th and 57th minute. Red-shirt first-year Alisha Bass headed a winner while inside the box from a free kick delivery by sophomore Sammi Dunda. A quick one-two pass from first-year Kaitlyn Lomsnes to sophomore Laurel Ramer put the Cowgirls ahead for the rest of the match.

The Coyotes rank fourth for assists, fifth in points per game and seventh in highest scoring team in NCCA Division-I play. Their next match will be Sunday in Vermillion against Creighton (5-0-0) at 1 p.m.
