Idding named Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Week

The positives keep rolling in for the Coyote football team.

Sunday, a day after the Coyotes beat No. 23 ranked Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 28-21, South Dakota defensive end Drew Iddings was honored as the Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Week.

Iddings, a junior from Rapid City, was the leader of a team that limited Northern Arizona to 73 yards rushing on 26 attempts while also forcing Lumberjack quarterback Kyren Poe to throw three interceptions.

“We went out there and got some stops and some interceptions, which got our confidence back,” Iddings said. “It was a good win heading into our bye week.”

Iddings finished the game with four tackles and a sack — the first sack of the season for the Coyotes.

“He’s a monster, just all over the place,” head coach Joe Glenn said. “He plays sideline to sideline, which is impressive for a big guy to play like that.”

Three of Iddings’s tackles were in the backfield, and he was also credited with a hurry. Glenn said it was impressive watching his defensive end have his way all afternoon.

“If you look at his stats he’s got tackles for loss and really (Northern Arizona) couldn’t do much with him,” Glenn said. “He’s a bruiser. You don’t see him because he plays inside, but he’s a good football player.”

Through four games Iddings has 18 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three quarterback hurries and one blocked kick. The junior was one of 10 Coyotes to start all 12 games last year when he recorded 51 tackles, good for seventh on the team.

After the bye week, the Coyotes will travel to Carbondale, Ill. and take on Southern Illinois University Oct. 4.
