SGA passes multiple resolutions, donates $20,000 to downtown theater

The Student Government Association’s Tuesday night meeting was brief, as they passed two resolutions and one bill with little debate among senators.

The first to pass was Resolution #4, which involved appropriating funds to TEDxUSD. After weeks of discussion, the resolution passed with no debate or opposition.

The TEDxUSD student board’s original asking price was $10,000, but because they managed to get money from outside sources in the past few weeks, the final amount was lowered to $4,850.

Resolution #5, which appropriates $20,000 to the Vermillion Downtown Cultural Association for the Twin theaters, also passed with no debate, but with two ‘no votes.’

Senators Jordan Hanson and Mohammed Ali Suria both voted no on Resolution #5.

While last week’s discussion around the resolution focused on a lack of feedback from senators’ constituents, resulting in it being tabled, the issue wasn’t mentioned this week.

The VDCA will receive the money from SGA’s reserve fund to help cover part of the cost of a new digital projector and sound system.

Senate Bill #50 was another measure that passed Tuesday.

The bill will give $300 to the Rushmore Public Policy Institute to cover an annual WordPress subscription. Though the group originally asked for $630 to cover the subscription, marketing materials, a premium news subscription and South Dakota paperwork to help protect their brand and longevity, SGA determined there were higher-line items in need of funding.

The Senate also briefly discussed establishing caucuses in SGA, which was proposed by Senator Nathaniel Steinlicht as a way for senators to better represent their constituents. More discussion on this is scheduled for their next meeting Oct. 6.
