USD professor authors book, ‘Document Image Analysis’

One professor has authored a new book, “Document Image Analysis.”

The book covers topics such as pattern recognition, image processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

KC Santosh, assistant professor & graduate program coordinator for the computer science department said in an email interview with The Volante that his book is a document analysis project.

“The book presents research problems, state-of-the-art methods that convey basic steps as well as prominent techniques, evaluation metrics and protocols, and research standpoints/directions that are associated with it,” Santosh said. “However, it is not limited to straightforward isolated graphics (visual patterns) recognition; it also addresses complex and composite graphical symbols recognition, which is motivated by real-world industrial problems.”
Santosh said he has been working on his book for more than a decade.
“The book is composed of my more than a decade of experience in document engineering that is under the scope of pattern recognition, computer vision and machine learning,” he said.
Santosh said he chose the topics of pattern recognition, image processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning because he wanted readers to understand this process.
“It is basically a document engineering project, where I chose a topic: graphics recognition that happens in several different problems, such as historical map analysis and recognition, electrical circuit and/or wiring diagram interpretation, architectural floor plan understanding, and logo detection and verification,” he said. “These topics help readers understand how can image analysis be done intelligently. Of course, this involves pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning since we need automated process (for a big data).”
Academicians, research scientists, industrialists, PhD scholars and graduate students are who his book’s general audience will be toward, Santosh said.
Santosh has also published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles during his career and is working on other books at the moment.
“Currently, I am working on the following books: 1) Use of speech processing in healthcare; 2) Medical imaging: use of Artificial Intelligence, Image recognition and machine learning techniques and 3) Document understanding using machine learning,” he said. “Besides, I am editing several journal issues in the domain: machine learning, artificial intelligence and pattern recognition.”
Santosh said that learning artificial intelligence can be rewarding.
“I would say, artificial intelligence and machine learning can help our lives better since we will need automation because of big data happening everywhere,” Santosh said.
